Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas announced on Tuesday, July 23, that Savonn Dangerfield, 22, was arraigned this week and charged with second-degree murder and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon - all felonies - for allegedly shooting and killing a 23-year-old man near a Hempstead school last year.
On Oct. 12 last year, shortly after noon, Jeffrey Lee was walking with his girlfriend on Dartmouth Street in Hempstead when he was allegedly approached by Dangerfield at the intersection of Stewart Avenue.
Dangerfield allegedly shot Lee three times, and he later died from his wounds at Winthrop Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police investigators found multiple shell casings belonging to a 9mm semi-automatic pistol, which Dangerfield allegedly shot. Dangerfield was arrested following an investigation on May 13 by police in Steubenville, Ohio and was extradited to Nassau County for arraignment.
Singas said that Dangerfield was remanded back to jail and is scheduled to appear back in court on Aug. 9. If he is convicted, he faces a term of 25 years to life in prison.
“This defendant is charged with brazenly shooting and killing an unarmed 23-year-old man as he walked with his girlfriend near a Hempstead school,” Singas said. “Though he tried to run from this horrific murder, he was apprehended in Ohio, and will now be held to account for the depraved violence alleged in this indictment.”
